We spent the majority of 2020 wearing reusable face masks and unfortunately, it looks like 2021 isn’t going to be any different. Of course, face masks are important to keep ourselves and others safe… but that doesn’t mean that we can’t have a little fun with them too, right?
Face masks have quickly become an accessory with so many different colours, patterns and materials to choose from. Here at Poko, we have put together a little guide to help you choose which reusable face mask is the right fit for you.
Choosing a reusable face mask
When it comes to choosing a reusable face mask, it’s easy to pick based solely on looks but will it really work effectively? When picking a reusable face mask, there are a few things to consider: fit, thickness, and fabric.
Making sure your reusable face mask fits
Everyone is shaped differently and luckily, reusable face masks come in a variety of shapes and sizes too. When it comes to choosing a face mask, you should make sure that it fits your face correctly. Ideally, your masks should be hugging your face.
Your mask should fit over your nose, covering your nostrils, mouth and chin. Basically, it should cover the entire bottom half of your face - perfect if you’re in a rush and didn’t have time to put make-up on!
We would recommend choosing a reusable mask with elastic or adjustable ear loops - this means that you the mask will stay put. It’s super annoying if you have to keep adjusting your mask but it’s also important to avoid touching your face/mask as much as possible.
If you’re someone who wears glasses, you have probably felt the pain of fogged up specs already. There are a million different “hacks” to help but opting for reusable face masks with a bendable metal nose strip is our #1 tip.
Bendable nose strips help to create a tight seal around your nose. This helps avoid the fog problem and also helps to hold your mask in place.
How thick should it be?
When choosing your reusable mask, don’t forget to check how many layers it has. Ideally, your mask should have two or three layers. This acts as a filter and offers additional protection for you and others around you.
While some people choose to double-mask, making sure you have a well-fitting mask, with tightly woven, layered fabric should be sufficient.
It’s also worth noting that while reusable masks with valves on them might be easier to breathe through, they’re not very effective in protecting us. The valves often release unfiltered air, so if you’re contagious you could be spreading germs to others around you.
What fabric should I choose for my reusable face mask?
When it comes to fabrics, you’re truly spoiled for choice. But, there are some fabrics better than others?
Silk reusable face masks might feel a little #boujie, but they’re still a very effective way to protect yourself. As a fabric, silk is extremely soft, but it is also extremely strong.
They’re also hypoallergenic, and they’re less likely to absorb moisture than other fabrics. This means that they’re a great option if you need to wear them for long periods of time, i.e. for work.
Silk might be the best option for you if you have sensitive skin too. Because the natural fibres of silk are delicate and smooth, they don’t cause a lot of friction when they rub against the skin. This means that they’re less likely to irritate the skin or cause breakouts.
Cotton reusable face masks are extremely comfortable and breathable, meaning they’re also a good option if you’re required to wear a mask for work. They’re also ideal if you find it a little hard to breathe through reusable face masks made from heavier fabrics.
Cotton and cotton-polyester blends are the most commonly used fabrics when it comes to reusable face masks and there are just so many options. Because everyone is shaped differently and everyone has a different budget, it’s hard to recommend particular brands.
However, there are so many small, Irish businesses selling good quality face masks. Many of these reusable face masks are made using Irish cotton, and they come in a range of colours and patterns. Plus, it’s nice to support local small businesses during these trying times!
Hemp is a less common fabric choice for reusable face masks, but it has a bunch of benefits. Reusable face masks are great because they’re cheaper than buying disposable ones. You're also reducing waste which makes them super sustainable. But if you want to kick it up a notch, choosing a hemp reusable face mask might be the best option for you.
Not only are hemp masks reusable, but they’re also biodegradable! These eco-friendly reusable face masks can be washed like any other reusable face masks. Just boil them briefly to disinfect them or wash using a mild detergent. As with any reusable mask, try to avoid putting them in the tumble dryer. Heat can warp the shape or shrink your masks.

Hemp face masks are super breathable, so they’re pleasant to wear, and they’re gentle on your skin. Speaking of skin, if you’re struggling with maskne, we’ve got you covered with our guide to preventing breakouts from wearing face coverings.
