Ingredient Spotlight - Sea Buckthorn Oil

Buckthorn oil has been used a lot in the beauty industry, and this is due to its many powerful healing qualities. Known to be packed with vitamins and antioxidants, it’s a welcome addition to any skincare routine. Sea buckthorn oil does not only help to soothe acne-prone skin, it also helps to rejuvenate ageing skin. There are many benefits to using sea buckthorn oil on the skin and that is why we use this powerhouse ingredient in our Soothing Serum!

What is buckthorn oil?

Found in mountainous regions across Asia and Europe, sea buckthorn is a shrub, covered in small berries. It is also known as hippophae rhamnoides. Two kinds of oil can be extracted from the shrub - fruit oil and seed oil. Both have their own unique healing properties.

Buckthorn seed oil is packed with essential fatty acids such as omega 3, omega 6, and omega 9. These fatty acids help to hydrate and rejuvenate dry or ageing skin. Also full of vitamin E, the oil helps to deeply hydrate the skin, bringing out your natural glow.

Extracted from the pulp of the fruit, buckthorn fruit oil contains both omega 6 and omega 7. Both of these essential oils are known to help repair damaged skin. As fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory qualities, using sea buckthorn for acne helps to soothe irritated and stressed skin.

What are the benefits of using sea buckthorn for your skin?

Sea buckthorn oil is a powerful ingredient in your skincare routine because it is packed with over 60 different antioxidants and 20 different minerals and vitamins - all of which nourish your skin.

Vitamin C

Did you know that buckthorn oil has 12 times more vitamin C than an orange does? Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is an impressive antioxidant which can boost the production of collagen in the skin. Collagen is a protein found in the skin, which gives it its elasticity. That's why keeping collagen production high is key to reducing the signs of ageing - it keeps the skin looking plump and firm.

Vitamin C can also help to brighten the skin and reduce pigmentation - giving you a youthful and healthy glow. As if that wasn’t enough, it may even help treat and prevent damage to the skin caused by UV exposure.

Using sea buckthorn for acne

As this oil, in particular, is known to calm and soothe the skin, using sea buckthorn oil for acne has had good results. Dehydrated skin often will produce excess oil, in a bid to hydrate itself - sometimes this excess oil, combined with bacteria and dead skin cells, can cause acne. One of the effects of using sea buckthorn oil for acne is that it will help to deeply hydrate the skin. In turn, will help to balance the oil production of the skin.

The vitamin C present in buckthorn oil will help to remove pigmentation left behind by any previous pimples, and it can help to reduce scarring from previous breakouts too. The fatty acids can also help to heal irritated and damaged skin, following a breakout.

Other sea buckthorn benefits

As we mentioned before, sea buckthorn oil is perfect for ageing skin. Vitamin C will help to boost collagen production, and to bring a healthy glow to dull skin. It leaves the skin feeling plump and firm - this will help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles!

How we use sea buckthorn oil in our Soothing Serum?

Sea buckthorn oil has many powerful vitamin and mineral properties which work in harmony with the other ingredients in our soothing serum. This serum contains vegetable glycerin which helps to hydrate the skin. This paired with the hydrating qualities of sea buckthorn oil mean that your skin will receive intense hydration.
