New year skincare resolutions 2021 - your complete guide

2020 is (finally) over and a fresh new year has almost arrived. With the new year, comes new years resolutions, new habits, and new routines. Many people choose to pursue a healthier lifestyle by trying to hit the gym more often or eating more fruit and veg. But why not update your skincare routine too? Poko is here to help with your new skincare 2021.

1. Wear SPF every day

We have all heard of the importance of wearing SPF, but let’s face it - we definitely don’t wear it as much as we should. 2021 is the year that this changes.

Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, is a cream or spray that protects your skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. Our skin is exposed to UV rays even on the cloudiest days so we should be applying sun protection every single day.

Including SPF application in your morning skincare routine is the best way of updating your skincare 2021 routine with this skincare resolution. Apply UV protection spray or cream to the face and decolletage as the last step of your AM routine.

Alternatively, use a foundation with built-in SPF protection. There are beautiful cruelty-free and vegan options from IT Cosmetics or Bare Minerals.

It is recommended that you top of your skin protection every 2 hours so get into the habit of spritzing an SPF mist throughout the day. Using a mist with sun protection is fast and it won’t disturb your make up. Pop the bottle in your handbag so you can top up, on-the-go.

2. Switch to clean, green beauty

There has been an awful lot of talk about clean beauty and using eco-friendly, sustainable products - but what does that mean?

Clean beauty and skincare products are made using ingredients that are kind to you and your skin. We uses fruit and plant extracts that are packed with antioxidants, and fatty acids. These natural ingredients help to nourish and protect the skin.

A clean skincare routine isn’t just about using ingredients that are kind to you though. It’s about using products that are ethically and sustainably sourced. That’s why Poko products are made using the highest grade CBD which is sustainably sourced from Colorado.

Poko products are also Leaping Bunny certified which means that no Poko products or the ingredients used were tested on animals. Poko care about our furry friends so no animal by-products are used in any of our products - all of them are vegan-friendly!

3. Clean your makeup brushes

It can be a bit of a pain to clean makeup brushes as often as we’re supposed to but it’s necessary. Not cleaning your makeup brushes is one of the most common skincare mistakes you can make. Think about it, brushes and sponges that you use daily will have a build-up of product on them. Plus, dead skin cells, bacteria, and oil will also cling onto your beauty tools - yikes!

Cleaning makeup brushes

To maintain clean makeup brushes and keep breakouts at bay, it’s recommended that you clean your brushes at least once a week. Tools that have the most contact with your skin i.e. foundation and concealer brushes/sponges need to be cleaned more often.

Try to set aside some time on Sunday evening to give those brushes a quick scrub. Wet the brushes with lukewarm water and use a facial cleanser or baby shampoo to break down the product. Rinse the bristles and leave to dry on a clean towel. Beauty blenders can be washed in the washing machine with the rest of your laundry. Simply pop them in a sock and tie it with a headband!

4. Always remove your makeup before bed

One of the most important additions to your new skincare 2021 edition is to make sure you remove your makeup every night. When bedtime is approaching quickly and you’re exhausted, you might be tempted to skip the 5-step skincare routine and just hop into bed. We’ve all done it at some point.

It’s a new year and a new you so ditch this habit and your skin will certainly thank you. Use a cleansing oil to melt away makeup. Rinse and repeat. T double cleanse will make sure that every bit of makeup has been removed and your skin is sparkling clean.

If you have frequent late nights and you’re struggling with this skincare resolution, make it easier for yourself. Keep micellar water and reusable cleansing pads next to your bed. This isn’t as good as a double cleanse but it’s better than sleeping in a full face of makeup.

5. Try something new - treat yourself to a new skincare item!

Up your skincare game in 2021 and treat yourself to a new skincare item. Why not Poko’s Luxury Facial Oil? This facial oil is perfect for locking in moisture, especially during the colder months. Rich in omega acids this Luxury Facial Oil will leave skin feeling hydrated, nourished, and plump. Infused with CBD, this oil will help to rejuvenate all skin types, including oily, and sensitive skin.

Add a few drops of the Luxury Facial Oil to your moisturiser (it pairs perfectly with the Regenerating Collagen Moisturiser) and massage into the skin. Alternatively, apply to the hands and press into the skin. Use a gua sha or facial roller to help the oil absorb into the skin. Using a gua sha or roller is also believed to help circulation and lymphatic drainage. It also feels amazing!
